BECAUSE YOU CARE - The new CXD Alan Buchanan digitisation cradle for fragile books has been re-engineered with the approval of the late Alan Buchanan by CXD Technical Director, Paul Mason with design assistance from Robert Campbell, CXD Furniture and Equipment Specialist.
We are grateful to Colin Dunn of Scriptura.co.uk for his time, advice, and contribution to the design. Colin’s knowledge of digitising rare books was invaluable to us.
The new cradle is designed and engineered to be straight forward, easy to use and excellent value for money.
The design for the Preservation Book Cradle came from an invitation to develop ideas to hold safe books of a delicate construction during the process of digitisation of their pages.

The design for the Preservation Book Cradle came from an invitation to develop ideas to hold safe books of a delicate construction during the process of digitisation of their pages.
The fundamental element of the cradle is the movement of one fixed platform and one movable platform relative to each other as the book’s pages are turned. These platforms bear the weight of the book and, by adjustment, remove stress from the spine. The movement of these platforms was patented in the UK and the USA by Alan Buchanan.
The frame is made from powder coated steel, with a fabric spine support. The 2023 Preservation Book Cradle design has been simplified to make it more user friendly without compromising on the performance. Book Cradles are made to order by hand in our factory, so we can incorporate modifications if necessary.
