Great North Museum

Conservation storage, equipment and display specialist Conservation By Design (CXD) has been awarded a £1.2 million contract to supply the new Great North Museum in Newcastle with Rothstein bespoke showcases.

The project is a demanding brief – with over 90 individually designed cases to be manufactured to order and installed at the museum by the end of November 2008. Great North Museum turned to Conservation By Design after being let down by another supplier who couldn’t deliver the project.

The £26 million Great North Museum, due to open in Spring 2009, will include major displays exploring the wonder and diversity of the world, spectacular archeological finds from Ancient Greece, mummies from Ancient Egypt and the North East’s best collection of prehistoric rock art. It will also include internationally important collections from Newcastle University’s Museum of Antiquities, the Shefton Museum, the Hancock Museum and the Hatton Gallery.

Lindy Galliland, project manager for Great North Museum, commented: “The Great North Museum is envisaged as a flagship visitor attraction for Newcastle, combining a number of stunning collections in a new accessible facility.

“The old Museum of Antiquities for example had display cases crammed with objects to showcase just a fraction of the collection. The vast number of new Rothstein showcases being installed by Conservation By Design will help the new museum to showcase a far greater range of items from the collection to the public for the first time, and offers an exciting new experience for future generations within the North East.”

Conservation By Design have a wealth of experience delivering showcases to such prestigious institutions as the Museum of London, the National Gallery of Scotland and the National Museum of Ireland – so were confident they could meet the demanding brief.

Design work for the project commenced in May, with Conservation By Design working closely with the University to design each of the unique cases.

Denise Troughton, marketing manager for Conservation By Design, said: “Our involvement in the Great North Museum project shows that Conservation By Design are able to deliver complex bespoke products against tight timescales. We supply a vast range of conservation products, from individual items used in the restoration and preservation process through to large display products such as the CXD museum showcases being installed at the Great North Museum.”
