Description
The new CXD Alan Buchanan digitisation cradle for fragile books has been re-engineered with the approval of the late Alan Buchanan, by CXD Technical Director Paul Mason, with design assistance from Robert Campbell, CXD’s Furniture and Equipment Specialist.

We are grateful to Colin Dunn of Scriptura.co.uk for his time, advice, and contribution to the design. Colin’s knowledge of digitising rare books was invaluable to us.

The new cradle is designed and engineered to be straight forward, easy to use and excellent value for money.

The design for the Preservation Book Cradle came from an invitation to develop ideas to hold safe books of a delicate construction during the process of digitisation of their pages.

The fundamental element of the cradle is the movement of one fixed platform and one movable platform relative to each other as the book’s pages are turned. These platforms bear the weight of the book and by adjustment then remove stress from the spine.

The movement of these platforms was patented in the UK and the USA by Alan Buchanan.

The frame is made from powder coated steel with a fabric spine support.

The 2023 Preservation Book Cradle design has been simplified to make it more user friendly without compromising on the performance.

Book Cradles are made to order by hand in our factory, so we can incorporate modifications if required.

Specification

Suitable for books up to 420mm spine x 320mm wide x 100mm thick. Universal camera mount includes a 1/4" screw fitting and anti-slip rubber pad. Assembled dimensions: approx. 1100x700x800mm high overall.

Operation
The platforms which support the book can be adjusted in angle and position using the side hand wheels. Also, the moving platform can be raised or lowered by adjusting the hand wheel underneath. The tension of both fabric spine supports can be adjusted at the back of the moving frame using the orange clamps.

The camera can be adjusted in all directions to obtain the best position using the fine adjustments provided. The main slider with rails includes a mechanical counter and locking clamp. The fine adjuster and lifting table also have locking knobs. The scales with 1mm intervals can be used to allow precise movement of the camera.

The main slider with rails is mounted centrally to the Camera Mount Frame. However, it can be moved sideways left or right by unscrewing the 4 black hand screws accessed underneath and using the spare holes either side.

The operator must familiarise themselves with all the adjustments prior to use.

Once the platforms have been moved to the optimal positions in relation to the camera, and the spine support adjusted to the correct tension, the cradle is ready for use.

Box contents
The new design is now delivered in one solid timber box ready for self-assembly. The box is perfect for storage of the unit and takes the whole cradle.
